Last Friday Picture Show

Next Show: Friday April 25th @ 7 pm
METROPOLIS

”There can be no understanding between the hands and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator.”

The 1927 silent classic  written by Thea von Harbou and directed by Fritz Lang

With original musical accompaniment by Jesse Chandler and friends.

Plot:

In a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.  It is the future, and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don't know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don't have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the "thinkers" dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees... Last Friday of the Month Movies at STS

The golden age of movies is returning!
To
Phoenicia!
The Shandaken Theatrical Society is proud to inaugurate the "Last Friday Picture Show," a series of classic and art house movies, on January 25 at
7 p.m. at our theater at 10 Church Street, Phoenicia. We will show real 16mm prints on the last Friday of every month for a suggested donation of $5. Refreshments, including popcorn, will be served at a nominal fee.

Besides the fact that everyone has been begging us for years to put on movies at the theater, we are happy to be bringing back one of the historical uses of the building. Originally an Odd Fellows Hall, built in 1887, the building was a movie house from the 40's through some time in the 70's, showing movies every night in summer and on weekends in winter. "I saw Gone With The Wind there when it first came out," says Richard Knight, a lifelong resident of the area, and one of the founding members of the Theatrical Society. "And I think we only paid 25 cents--though for Gone With The Wind we paid a little more. I was about 15 and worked in a boarding house in Mt. Pleasant and with the other young people from there we used to get a taxi to bring us to Phoenicia for about $1. We'd go to a movie and then go to where Morne Imports is now and have a soda at the soda fountain." Knight also remembers giggling during a serious Bette Davis movie and being chastised the next day at school by his teacher, who had been in the theater that evening as well. So kids, please keep it down back there, okay?!!!

Roll 'em!
